Hashtags for small businesses: how many and which ones?
Hashtags aren’t a magic trick, but they help your video reach the right audience. Here’s how to choose them.
What hashtags are good for
Hashtags link your video to a topic. Platforms use them – alongside picture, sound and text – to understand what it is about. But they don’t replace good content, and in the end the platform decides how far a video goes.
How many?
Less is usually more. Three to five fitting hashtags are a good guide. Instagram itself now recommends a few precise hashtags instead of long lists. On YouTube Shorts, the platform only shows the first few anyway.
The right mix
- Place:
#bielefeld,#badsalzuflen– important for anyone with local customers. - Trade or service:
#fliesenleger(tiler),#friseur(hairdresser),#mittagstisch(lunch menu). - Topic of the video:
#vorhernachher(before and after),#badsanierung(bathroom renovation). - Your own hashtag (optional): your business name, so people can find all your videos.
Common mistakes
- Huge hashtags like
#loveor#instagood– a small business gets lost there. - Hashtags that have nothing to do with the video. That looks unprofessional.
- Always copying the same list under every video.
- Other companies’ brand names without any connection.
Your caption counts too
In the caption, say in plain words what people can see and where it is. Platforms read this text too. A clear sentence like “New bathroom in Detmold, finished in three weeks” often helps more than ten hashtags.
How Fipsta helps
For every video, the assistant in Fipsta suggests its own captions and matching hashtags for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. You can change them and copy them with one tap. Nobody can promise reach – but you save yourself the head-scratching.
